THIRTEENTH GENERATION

4606. Jacques HERTEL was born in 1603 at Fécamp, Normandy. He arrived probably around 1626 at Québec. He learned the Algonquin language by living with the native people. He obtained a fief at Trois-Rivières on 16 Dec 1633. He built his house there, neighboring the fief of Jean GODEFROY. He married Marie MARGUERIE on 23 Aug 1641 in Québec. Listed on the Marriage Contract are Nicolas HERTEL, his father, from Trois-Rivières, his mother Jeanne MIRIOT, François MARGUERIE, an interpreter friend and brother of Marguerite, and Marthe ROMAN, parents of the bride, also from Trois-Rivières. The Notary is Martial PIRAUBE, of Trois-Rivières. Jacques died suddenly on 10 Aug 1651. The location is listed as "undetermined". We can assume that it was at Trois-Rivières since all parties were living there at the time. He served as interpreter for the Jesuits and was the trustee of the settlers in 1647. (1)(6)
